Joshua, I just did my first Half Ironman (Oceanside 2010) and just read your story.... I'm cracking up and can relate to how I was left with the whole experience. I just had to take a moment and say I am HIGHLY impressed that in 6months you accomplished something that SO very few would ever take on. I commend you for your courage, strength and determination! Congrats and I hope that you have completed more!

I am doing the 2010 half March 27th, and stumbled across your blog while looking for inspiration. Thanks for the write up, and I am really looking forward to becoming a finisher!

Great story. Very humorous. It's good to be able to look at these types of life experiences on the lighter (less serious) side. I think you did pretty well, given really no previous experience with a long course. I think you should do this race again, and this time shoot to get in under 6-1/2 hours. If you can keep out of the medical tent next time, then that alone will save you a good amount of time.

Good luck!

Thanks for your candid yet humorous take on the race and most of all, Congratulations! There is something to be said for you not walking your bike up the first big hill and for also running the entire way despite others walking! You rock! I, too, am considering this race for 2010. I figure the swim can't be as grueling as the Chicago Oly swim this past summer(very wavy and cold)! Am worried about making that big step from 25 miles to 56 on the bike however!

Keep up the good work with your weight loss!

I loved reading your story about your Oceanside 70.3 race.
I just came back from Vineman 70.3 for which I was not able to do, thanks to getting sick. I'm trying to pick myself back up and get into the swing of things. Vineman was to be my first half ironman, for which I trained for 16 weeks for.
Your Story gave me inspiration again to get back out there and train harder. I'm seriously considering Oceanside since its right in my back yard.
Thanks for the great story

Congratulations on your ironman. My trainer is doing the one in 2010. He wants me to think about it also. I've dome 6 marathons, 14 sprint tris, but the open water swim is a bit inimidating to me. Living inland I don't have many opportunities to get in a lot of open water training. It's something to think about though.
